Michael's work is featured in a new book from Rice Gallery on the history of a pioneering installation-art space.
Long before it became commonplace, Rice Gallery was one of a handful of spaces in the US devoted to commissioning site-specific installation art.
Now the Gallery's 22-year history has been chronicled in One Thing Well, a handsome coffee table book including all of the 72 site-specific installations commissioned by the Gallery. Rice Gallery's director and chief curator Kim Davenport conceived of the original mission of focusing on installation art-of doing one thing well-and she and curator Joshua Fischer would go on to develop a remarkable series of installations from 1995 to 2017, when the Gallery closed.
Many of the artists Rice Gallery commissioned had never shown in Texas or even the US previously. The book features spectacular photography of installations from artists including El Anatsui, Shigeru Ban, Michael De Feo, Tara Donovan, Nicole Eisenman, Yayoi Kusama, Sol LeWitt, Judy Pfaff, and Karim Rashid.
Edited by Rainey Knudson. Text by Kimberly Davenport, Joshua Fischer, Nonya Grenader, Dave Hickey, Carlos Jimenez, Kelly Klaasmeyer, and Sandra Zalman. One Thing Well is published by Rice Gallery and distributed by D.A.P.
