    It's been twenty years and the joy of this hasn't faded one bit.

    The year was 2005. My flower project was twelve years old at the time and I was invited to be on the cover of New York Magazine. Their Photography Director, Jody Quon, reached out to me asking if I wanted to be a part of the cover of their inaugural edition of their Reasons To Love New York issue. When I heard Jody's voicemail while driving on the Merritt Parkway I had to pull over and listen again to make sure I wasn't dreaming. The very next day I was at Silvercup Studios in Queens for the photoshoot and by the end of the week I was on newstands across the five  boroughs.

    The funny thing is, I wasn't supposed to be the sole cover feature. Their original idea was to have the text "REASONS TO LOVE NEW YORK" in a large font dominating the cover, with some of the different things that make New York City so lovable peppered around each letter. I was supposed to be the size of a postage stamp painting a flower onto one of the letters but during the shoot, as a photo of me uploaded full page onto the monitor, I just blurted out, "That's it! That's the cover!" I was startled by my frankness but couldn't resist, And so it happened. Afterwards, New York invited me back to grace two additional covers, but in those cases, in the role as designer. I'm forever grateful to Jody and the NY Mag team!

     

    To celebrate the anniversary of this first cover, we've dug up some flower prints from over the years. Some are one-offs, short-lived editions, or previous anniversary releases. Many have never been released.
